Regarded by some as the true country 'down under', New Zealand is famed for its beautiful scenery, its fantastic ski-fields and its remarkable volcanic-fuelled hot springs.  Split into two large islands, known simply as the north and south islands, New Zealand has an incredibly varied climate that sees it enjoy warm sandy beaches and rainforests in the north and glaciers, fjords and huge mountain ranges in the south.  On the north island the cities of Wellington (New Zealand's capital), Hamilton and Auckland provide metropolitan shopping and public museums and art galleries, whilst the towns of Rotorua (famed for its hot springs) and Tauranga (known for its holiday resorts) are popular with tourists.  In the south Christchurch (regarded as the entry-point to the Antarctic), Dunedin (with a strong Scottish heritage) and Queenstown (close to the ski-fields) are amongst the highlights.

Getting to New Zealand is relatively easy with several international airports dotted around the country.  Auckland International and Christchurch International are by far the most significant, with Auckland one of the busiest in the Australasian region.  Air New Zealand, Emirates, Qantas and Singapore are amongst the airlines that visit the airports within New Zealand.  Many more connections are available a short flight away in Sydney (Australia).  New Zealand is a remarkably easy country to get around by car, and for this reason many visitors choose to rent a private vehicle for the duration of their stay.  International brands such as Hertz, Thrifty, Budget and Avis are dotted all over the two main islands, particularly in the large cities and near major transportation hubs.
